Just Because! is an original Japanese anime television series by Hajime Kamoshida, the author of The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, and Kiseki Himura, the author of Getsuyōbi no Tawawa. The 12-episode anime, produced by Pine Jam, aired between October and December 2017.[1] Sentai Filmworks has licensed the series and streamed it on Amazon's Anime Strike service in the US.[2]

Plot

It is winter of their third year of high school, near the end of second semester, when students have very little time in high school left. Everyone is just waiting for graduation. Until Eita Izumi—their classmate in middle school who had moved far away—suddenly moves back home at a peculiar time. This reunites them, as if a go signal rang out to the feelings of the students who had just thought their high school life would end without fanfare.[3]

A transfer student who come back to his hometown after 4 years. Because his father's job was often relocated, Eita often transferred schools. He was in baseball club along with Haruto back in middle school.
Mio Natsume (夏目 美緒, Natsume Mio)
Voiced by: Karin Isobe[4]
The former student council president. Mio was Eita and Haruto's classmate during middle school. She plans to enroll in college and is studying hard to make that happen. Her unrequited feelings for a middle school crush still influence her.
Haruto Sōma (相馬 陽斗, Sōma Haruto)
Voiced by: Taishi Murata[4]
A baseball team member who has already secured a job after graduation. He and Eita are childhood friends. He has a crush on Hazuki and confesses his feelings but is rejected at first; however this changes over the series. Hazuki tells Haruto she won't date him until she is settled in college and Haruto finds a stable job and if he still loves her by that time.
Hazuki Morikawa (森川 葉月, Morikawa Hazuki)
Voiced by: Yuna Yoshino[4]
Hazuki is a member of the school concert band that has already decided on her preferred college. She does not stand out in class, and seems uninterested in romantic relationships. Haruto has a crush on her and confesses his feelings but is rejected at first. However, over the course of the series, this changes; Hazuki tells Haruto she won't date him until she is settled in college, Haruto finds a stable job and if his feelings remain unchanged.
Ena Komiya (小宮 惠那, Komiya Ena)
Voiced by: Lynn[4]
Ena is a second-year student, and a member of the photography club that is close to being disbanded. In order to save the club, she enters a photography competition. Later on, she develops a crush on Eita. She has a go-getter attitude, taking active steps to get what she wants, speaking her mind openly where everyone else is too nervous to speak up.

Hazuki's best friend who constantly looks after her, speaks out on her behalf and helps her and Haruto get together. Anime

The project was first teased as an April's Fools joke in 2017 under title April 1st The Animation.[6] It was later confirmed as real in the June issue of Gakken's Megami Magazine.[7]

Kiseki Himura designed the characters, Atsushi Kobayashi directed the series with screenplay by Hajime Kamoshida. Hiroyuki Yoshii adapted Kiseki's art into animation. Keisuke Fukunaga produced the series.[4] Pine Jam produced the animation.[8] It aired from October 5 to December 28, 2017 on AT-X, Tokyo MX, TV Kanagawa, MBS, and BS Fuji's programming block Anime Guild.[9][10] Nagi Yanagi serves as music producer as well performed the opening theme titled "Over and Over", while Karin Isobe, Yuna Yoshino, and Lynn performed the ending theme "behind".[11][12]

Eita Izumi transfers to a new high school in his junior year. Upon arriving for his registration, he meets his childhood friend, Haruto Soma. They play a game of baseball, when Haruto reveals that Mio Natsume (Eita's childhood crush), also attends the high school.

Haruto asks Hazuki out on a date vaguely. To his disappointment, Hazuki brings her little brothers along with her to the aquarium. The rest of the friends join them as they spend time together.

All the friends plan to hang out at the shrine to celebrate New Year's Eve. Hazuki and Haruto end up alone, while Eita and Mio have a confrontation. Haruto confesses and gets rejected, while Eita and Mio have an argument which leads to Eita revealing his feelings for Mio.

Mio buys chocolate for Eita but couldn't give it to him after she sees a photo of Komiya on his phone's home screen. Komiya plans on giving Eita chocolate, but realizes what happened and removes the photo and apologizes to Eita instead. Mio is seen outside the school crying and telling herself that she is serious about Eita. Morikawa asks Soma to meet her at the baseball and she tells him that she can't go out with him because they are going to be apart when she moves away for college; however, in the end, they agree that if Soma can wait until after she graduates and he's still interested in going out with her, she will go out with him. Eita goes out to meet Komiya, where she gives him a piece of chocolate and a handful of good luck charms for his exam. As a good luck charm for the photography contest, he gives back one of the charms that she'd pick out as the best one. Mio is home studying and pondering that Eita doesn't know how she feels. The episode ends with Komiya telling Eita she still likes him.

Komiya asks Eita to respond to her feelings after he passes the entrance exam and he agrees. Eita tells Soma that he'll confess to Mio if he passes his entrance exam. That night, Mio's sister hears from Eita that he got accepted to Joei—Mio's first choice college. On the exam day, while talking in school, Soma and Morikawa realize that Eita's taking the entrance exam for Mio's initial first choice, oblivious to the fact that she changed her first choice to Joei—the college Eita got accepted into. The results for both Eita and Mio are released with Mio passing hers. Meanwhile, Komiya gets the results of the photography contest.

Eita fails his entrance exam. He receives a text from Mio telling him she passed the test for her first choice. It's graduation and everyone says their good-byes. Eita tells Komiya that he was happy when she confessed to him but still, he can't go out with her because there is someone else he likes. After he left, she is seen crying in the club room. Eita runs into Mio at Joei; he confesses to liking her and she reciprocates.

Novel

A serialized novel adaptation of the anime was launched in Kadokawa's Da Vinci magazine starting October 2017 issue (released on September 6).[14] The first chapter tells the prologue anime's plot. Atsushi Kobayashi illustrated the cover for the novel.[15][16]

Web manga

A spin-off web manga series illustrated by Kamaboko RED is updated every day the anime's official Twitter account. Each chapter is two pages long.[17]
