Joseph Marcell (born August 14, 1948) is a British[1] actor and comedian best known for his role as Geoffrey Butler, the butler on the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air from September 1990, until it ended in May 1996. Born in Saint Lucia, he moved to the United Kingdom when he was nine years old, and grew up in Peckham, South London. Marcell lives in Banstead, Surrey.
Early life and education
Born in Saint Lucia, Marcell moved to the United Kingdom when he was nine years old.[2] He studied theatre and science at the University of Sheffield, then took courses in speech and dance at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Career
As a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, he appeared in productions of Othello and A Midsummer Night's Dream. He has also appeared often on British television and in feature films.[3]
He serves on the board of the Globe Theatre in London, where he featured in a nationwide production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.[4] In July 2017, Marcell began rehearsals as Titus Andronicus for the La Grande Shakespeare Company in La Grande, Oregon.[5]
Personal life
Marcell has been married twice. His first marriage was in 1975 to Judith M. Midtby; the couple eventually divorced. His second wife is Joyce T. Walsh, to whom he has been married since June 1995. Marcell has two children: Ben and Jessica Marcell.
