José Ramón Andrés Puerta (born 13 July 1969), known as José Andrés, is a Spanish-American[1] chef often credited with bringing the small plates dining concept to America.[2] He owns restaurants in Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles; Las Vegas; South Beach, Florida; and Dorado, Puerto Rico. Andrés is chair of the advisory board for LA Kitchen,[3] a social enterprise in Los Angeles, California that works to reduce food waste, provide job training, and increase access to nutritious food. He was awarded a 2015 National Humanities Medal at a 2016 White House ceremony.[4]

Early life

Andrés was born in Mieres, Principality of Asturias, Spain.

Career

Early in his career, he trained under Ferran Adrià at the restaurant elBulli. Beginning in the fall of 2010, Andrés taught a culinary physics course at Harvard University with Ferran Adrià.[5] In May 2012, Andrés was named dean of Spanish Studies at The International Culinary Center, where he and Colman Andrews developed a curriculum in traditional and modern Spanish cuisine, which debuted in February 2013.[6] On 29 October 2012, he announced he was heading back to the classroom, and would teach his first course on how food shapes civilization at George Washington University next year.[7]

In response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, he formed World Central Kitchen which provides healthy food to families and individuals touched by disasters. The organization operated in Southern California during the December 2017 wildfires to assist firefighters and first responders including the huge Thomas Fire in Ventura County. The organization also provided food to families affected by the fires.[8]

Trump Hotel restaurant

Andrés planned to open a restaurant in the Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC, in 2016. After Donald Trump made disparaging comments about Mexicans in June 2015, Andrés withdrew from the contract with the Trump Organization, which then sued him.[9] Andrés counter-sued, and the parties reached a settlement in April 2017.[10] Andrés remains an outspoken critic of Trump.[11][12]

Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria response

Andrés emerged as a leader of the disaster relief efforts in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria in 2017. His efforts to provide assistance encountered obstacles from FEMA and government bureaucrats, so instead, "we just started cooking." He organized a grass-roots movement of chefs and volunteers to establish communications, food supplies, and other resources and started serving meals. Andrés and his organization World Central Kitchen (WCK)[13] served more than 2,000,000 meals in the first month after the hurricane.[14][15][16][17] WCK received two short term FEMA contracts and served more meals than the Salvation Army or the Red Cross, but its application for longer term support was denied.

Personal life

Andrés is married and has three daughters.[18] He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in December 2013.[1]
