John Patrick Dolan (born June 8, 1962) is an American prelate of the Catholic Church and auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of San Diego.

Early life and education

Dolan was born June 8, 1962, in San Diego, California.[1] His parents are Catherine and Gerald Dolan. Dolan is the seventh of nine children.

Dolan attended the School of the Madeleine at St. Mary Magdalene Parish in San Diego. He attended the University of San Diego High School and, after graduating in 1981, he enrolled in St. Francis Seminary, a house of formation on the University of San Diego (USD) campus. After graduating with a B.A. in Philosophy in 1985, he entered Saint Patrick's Seminary and University in Menlo Park, California. After completing his Masters of Divinity and Master of Arts in Theology in 1989, he was ordained for the Diocese of San Diego.[1]

Priesthood

On July 1, 1989, Dolan was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of San Diego by Bishop Leo Thomas Maher.[1]

Within the diocese, Dolan served as Associate Pastor of St. Michael Parish in Paradise Hills and Santa Sophia Parish in Spring Valley, Pastor of St. Mary, Star of the Sea in Oceanside, St. Michael in Paradise Hills, St. Rose of Lima in Chula Vista, St. Michael in Poway, St. John the Evangelist in North Park, and St. Vincent de Paul in Mission Hills.

He has served on various boards and committees; including the Ecumenical Committee, Presbyteral Council, Personnel Board, Council of Deans, College of Consultors, and Priestly Vocations Task Force. He served as Director for Priestly Vocations. While serving as Pastor at St. Michael's in Poway, Dolan was appointed Vicar for Clergy, a position he still holds as Auxiliary Bishop.[1] He is also a member of the American Haitian Foundation and a founding member and chaplain of the California Lost Boys and Girls of Southern Sudan Foundation, benefiting the Lost Boys of Sudan.

Dolan served on medical mission teams to Andahuaylillas, outside of Cusco, Peru, Petite Rivier in Haiti, and Tijuana, Mexico.

He is the author of two books: Rose of Lima: A Nine Day Study of Her Life and Who is Like God? A Nine Day Journey with St. Michael the Archangel, as well as the founder of the Christ in Our Neighborhood website, featuring Sunday reflections designed to assist small church communities.

Episcopacy

On April 19, 2017, Pope Francis appointed Dolan auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of San Diego and titular bishop of the Diocese of Uchi Maius.[2][3] On June 8, 2017, Dolan was consecrated as a bishop and is currently both Vicar General and Vicar for Clergy and Moderator of the Curia.
