Tebogo Mokgoro (born 1948), known as Job Mokgoro, is a South African politician who serves as the current 6th Premier of the North West and member of the North West Provincial Legislature.[1]
Mokgoro was announced on 21 June 2018 by the ANC Secretary-General, Ace Magashule, as the incoming premier of the North West, after the African National Congress's national working committee (NWC) selected him. He fills the position after the former premier, Supra Mahumapelo, stepped down in May, following violent protests calling for him to step down as premier or be recalled by the African National Congress. He was reportedly seen as a compromise candidate since the process of selecting was complicated and he is not part of the African National Congress leadership structure of the North West. He is now part of the North West Provincial Executive Committee as an ex official member.[2][3]
Mokgoro officially assumed the office on 22 June 2018 and is expected to serve until the next general elections in 2019. He is the oldest person to hold the office.
Early life
Job Mokgoro was born in 1948 in Kimberley, Cape Province, Union of South Africa now Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa. He obtained a master of public administration degree at the University of Toledo.[4]
Career
After studying in the United States, Mokgoro became a lecturer at the University Boputhatswana.
In 1994, premier Popo Molefe appointed Mokgoro as the Director-General of the North West province. He is regarded as a disciplinarian, because in his tenure of Director-General, he patrolled the offices to make sure that no employee was leaving early on Friday afternoons. In 2014, premier Supra Mahumapelo released a statement that Mokgoro was reappointed as Director-General.
He also served as the Director General of the South African Management Development Institute and taught at the Wits University School of Governance.
His most recent position was principal of the National School of Governance.[5]
Personal life
He is married to Yvonne Mokgoro, a former Constitutional Court judge who served from 1994 until 2009.
