Jerry Kiernan

Jeremiah ("Fran") Kiernan (born May 31, 1953 in Listowel) is a former long-distance runner from Ireland.

Biography

He represented his native country at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, where he finished in ninth place in the men's marathon. His team mate John Treacy claimed silver in the same race. Kiernan twice won the Dublin Marathon: 1982 and 1992. A former Irish record holder over 3000 metres, Kiernan was also a sub-four-minute mile runner.

Kiernan visits Italy regularly, especially the Milan region where he visits his close friend and speaks to with fluent Italian.

Kiernan is a supporter of Shamrock Rovers and season ticket holder of FC Barcelona. He retired from teaching at St. Brigid's Boys School, Foxrock, in June 2013 where he was a teacher for approximately 40 years. He lives in the Ringsend area.

Kiernan now remains a coach for many athletes and trains regularly in the UCD campus.

He is part of RTÉ's athletics television coverage.[1]
