Jeppiaar Engineering College (JEC) is one of the institutions of Jeppiaar Educational Trust and was established on 15 August 2001. The college is a Christian Minority Institution. This is run by Sr. Arockiamary DMI.

Affiliation

The college is affiliated to the Anna University, Chennai and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education and Government of Tamil Nadu.[1]

Academic departments

The institution was established primarily as an engineering college but also conducts courses in Business Administration. The college consists of the following academic departments:

Department of Information Technology

The Information Technology department started in 2001 with student of 60 and then increased to 120 in the year 2010. It was accredited on 21 June 2011. The head of the department is Dr.Anbarasu Venkadachalam. Currently the Department has 350 students.This is the first department in academics.II and III Year students compulsorily undergo Inplant Training & final year students carry out project work in various industries.The department encourages the students to take part in National level SAE events.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering

The Electronics & Communication Engineering department started in 2001 with a student intake of 60 and increased to 120 in the year 2004. It was accredited on 19 July 2008.The Head of the Department is Dr. Anitha Titus.Currently the Department has 580 students.

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

The department started in the year 2001 with a student intake of 60 and increased to 120 in the year 2008. II and III Year students compulsorily undergo Inplant Training & final year students carry out project work in various industries aggregate in 2008

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Department was inspected in 2001 and later accredited on 19 July 2008. The department has an intake of around 132 students.The Head of the Department is Dr. V. Natarajan. The department encourages the students to take part in National level SAE events.

Facilities

The facilities of the institution include transportation for day-scholars covering all the Chennai city and also the suburbs such as Chenglepet,Kanchipuram,Tiruvallur and Ennore. central mess for all the students and staff providing healthy and hygienic food, fully equipped laboratories and central Library,a conference hall and an auditorium.

Campus accommodation

Campus accommodation is provided to students both boys and girls separately.

Controversy

Jeppiaar Engineering College, like other Jeppiaar educational institutions and other private colleges in Tamil Nadu, is known for extreme forms of gender segregation, when girls and boys are subjected to extreme restrictions. Some examples being, iron rods separating girls and boys, punishment and fines for looking and talking to each other, restrictions on clothing among others. This has been subject to much controversy and criticism.[4][5]
