Jehoash Ssibakyalyawo Mayanja Nkangi, also spelled Joash Mayanja Nkangi, (August 22, 1931 – March 6, 2017) was a Ugandan politician and lawyer who held a number of senior positions within Kingdom of Buganda and Government of Uganda.[1][2]
Mayanja Nkangi was born on August 22, 1931, in present-day Kalungu District, British Protectorate of Uganda, to parents, Isaya Sibakyalwayo and Yozefina Nantale.[1][2][3] He attended Kaabungo Masaka Primary School from 1937 to 1946, Kako Junior School from 1944 to 1946, and King's College Budo for secondary school from 1947 to 1949.[1] He received a bachelor's of arts from Makerere College (present-day Makerere College).[1] During the mid-1960s, Mayanja Nkangi became one of the first Ugandans to win a government to Oxford University in the United Kingdom, where he studied economics and public policy.[1] He obtained his master's degree from Oxford University in 1960.[1]
Mayanja Nkangi retired from politics in 2010.[1] That same year, he was appointed Chairman of the Uganda Land Commission, which he held from 2010 until 2013.[1] In later life, he wrote an autobiography, titled "Out of Empire into Servitude."[1]
Jehoash Mayanja Nkangi died from pneumonia in Nakasero Hospital in Kampala on March 6, 2017, at the age of 85.[3]

While at Oxford, Nkangi studied law at Lincoln’s Inn of Courts in London and returned to Uganda in 1960 to practise law. Joining Politics At the time, there was a movement against Indians and Nkangi started his own party with an aim of bringing everyone together. His party was called the United Party, which he later changed to United National Party. On August 17, 1964, Nkangi was overwhelmingly elected Buganda’s katikkiro by the Lukiiko.
