Jane Alison Langdale, CBE, FRS (born 1960)[1] is a British botanist and academic. She is Professor of Plant Development in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Oxford[5][6] and a Professorial Fellow at The Queen's College, Oxford.[7][8][9][10][11]

Education

Langdale was educated at Barr's Hill Grammar School in Coventry[1][7] and the University of Bath, where she was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Biology in 1982, specialising in microbiology.[12] .[3][7] Her PhD was in human genetics[12] and carried out at St Mary's Hospital Medical School[7] and Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School[13][14] and awarded by the University of London.[15]

Career and research

Following her PhD, Langdale was employed for five years as a postdoctoral researcher at Yale University with Tim Nelson.[12][16] She returned to the UK in 1990, to work in the Department of Plant Sciences where she has worked since.[12] Langdale's research interests[5][6][17] are in two main areas:

  1. the evolution of leaf development and meristem function in bryophytes, lycophytes and monilophytes
  2. the evolution and development of kranz anatomy in C4 plants,[18]

Langdale's research has been funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) [19] and has been published in leading peer reviewed scientific journals including Nature,[20] Science,[21] Current Opinion in Plant Biology,[22] Development,[23] Gene,[13] Trends in Genetics,[24]The Plant Cell,[25][26][27] Annual Review of Plant Biology,[28] Planta,[29] Plant Physiology,[30] Journal of Cell Science,[31] The EMBO Journal,[32] The Plant Journal, PLOS ONE[33] Genes & Development[4] and the New Phytologist.[34][35][36]

Langdale is the co-author of the book How to Succeed as a Scientist: From Postdoc to Professor[37] with materials scientist Barbara Gabrys. She featured on the BBC series, Plants: From Roots to Riches in 2014 with Kathy Willis.[38][39] Her former doctoral students include Armando Bravo-Garcia,[40] Jim Fouracre,[41] Eftychios Frangedakis,[42] Matt Hodges[43][44] and Yuki Yasumura.[45]

Awards and honours

Langdale was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2015.[46] Her certificate of election reads:

Langdale was elected a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 2007[2] and appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2018 Birthday Honours for services to Plant Science.[48][49] She was awarded a Doctor of Science degree (DSc) honoris causa by the University of Bath in 2018.[3]
