The Plant Cell is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal of botany, especially the areas of cell and molecular biology, genetics, development, and evolution. It is published by the American Society of Plant Biologists. The current editor-in-chief is Sabeeha Merchant (University of California, Los Angeles). The first issue of The Plant Cell was published in January of 1989, with Robert (Bob) Goldberg from University of California, Los Angeles as the founding Editor in Chief. [1]

According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2015 impact factor of 8.538 [2]

In October 2009, The Plant Cell introduced Teaching Tools in Plant Biology, a new online feature consisting of materials to help instructors teach plant biology courses. Each topic includes a short essay introducing the topic, with suggested further reading, and a PowerPoint lecture with handouts.

History

The decision to start The Plant Cell was made by the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) in 1987, with its first issue published in 1989. According to an article published on the occasion of the 100th issue [3] by then-Editor-in-Chief Brian Larkins, the original board in 1989 consisted of Bob Goldberg as Editor-in-Chief, Larkins as associate editor, and five coeditors: Nam-Hai Chua, Robert B. Horsch, Charles S. Levings III, Ralph S. Quatrano, and William E. Timberlake, with Machi F. Dilworth as the reviews editor. During the first few years of publication, the editorial board was expanded to include Adrienne E. Clarke, Enrico S. Coen, Robert L. Fischer, Wilhelm Gruissem, Andrew O. Jackson, Kenneth Keegstra, Jan Leemans, Timothy Nelson, and Susan R. Wessler
