Irma Chilton (born Mair Elizabeth Irma Evans, 12 November 1930 – 1990) was a Welsh children's writer in the English and Welsh languages.

Life and works

Irma Evans was born in Loughor, which is in Glamorgan but close to the border with Carmarthen. Her parents were Esther and Iorworth Evans, a furnaceman. She attended the University of Wales, where she obtained a BA and went into teaching.

Her debut work, Take Away The Flowers and Fuller's World, was published by Heinemann in 1967 under her married name. She also used the style I. M. Chilton. She wrote children's books in both English and Welsh and won eisteddfod prizes for them. They included the novels String of Time (1968, which later appeared as Nightmare, 1972), Goldie (1969), The Time Button (1970) and Rhwng cwsg ac effro (1975). She took the Crown for prose at the National Eisteddfod in Powys.[1][2]

Commemoration

There is an annual memorial prize, given each year to aspiring children's novelists by the Welsh Arts Council, called the Irma Chilton Bursary. Previous winners have included Jennifer Sullivan[3]
