Libya

Iran and Libya have diplomatic relations, with embassies in each other countries. The relations in the military, economic and cultural between the two countries have varied during the time.

Pahlavi government

Iran-Libya relations got stronger in 1967, when were king Idris in Libya and Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in Iran. While Ghadafi's revolution monarchy was overthrown and the Libyan Arab Republic established, the relationship between Libya and Iran was broken. Ghadafi along with Arab Leader's alliance accused the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of betraying Arab's interests and supporting Israel.[1] On the other hands, shah and Ghadafi, both demanded oil price with more profit a better oil price for their nations.[2]

After the Iranian revolution

After Iranian revolution (1979) in Iran, the shah was overthrown and relations between Iran and Libya changed and improved.[1]The turning point in Iran-Libya relations can be seen in the Iran-Iraq war. At this time, Iran needed military weaponry, Libya supported Iran and made weapons and missiles for it. During the war(Iran-Iraq), Libya and Syria were Iran's only allies in the Middle East.[3][4][5]

Some of the most important military weapons that Libya prepare to Iran include the following:[6]

Iranian-Libyan cooperation included constructing factories, roads, and hospital. Gaddafi visited the former Iranian president Rafsanjani and supreme leader of Iran Ali Khamenei. At the UN Security Council, Gaddafi vindicated Iranian's nuclear program and opposed enforce sanctions against the Muslim republic.[1] But by the kidnapping of Musa al-Sadr, the relations between the two countries became dark.[7]

After the Libyan revolution

In 2011 Libyan ambassador in Iran resigned by popular protests .[8][9] During the internal conflicts in Libya, Iran supported revolutionists and sentenced NATO and the USA for their conversation.In 30th August 2011, Abdel Jalil solicited for the return of Iran's ambassador to Libyan, Iran-Libya relations was strengthened. There, Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi has invited the chief of the Libyan National Transitional Council(NTC) to Iran.[9]
