Indiggo and Indiggo Twins are Gabriela and Mihaela Modorcea, Romanian-American actresses, dancers, singers, writers and the creators and performers of Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical and its cast album. The album has 4 opening songs, 19 songs from the show (from "La La La," sampled in Watch the Throne, to "I am Like God") and 2 closing songs.

They wrote, composed, choreographed, designed and perform their Off Broadway play Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical (2018), "a rare piece of visual and audio creativity." Basing the show on their 500-page bestseller Wicked Clone or how to deal with the evil (2016), they twist vampiric lore telling the story of a vampire bitten by a human being. The show has a mystical story, film projections from beginning till the end, 21 "immortal" original compositions, "fearless" dancing and a symphonic soundtrack.

American rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z sampled Indiggo's single "La La La" (2011) in their collaborative album Watch the Throne (2011) and described the twins as “ambassadors of the great Romanian tradition;” their singles "Hip Hop Jam" (2003) and "Be My Boyfriend" (2006) entered the German charts and their album Indiggo (2000) sold in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They signed a worldwide, multi-year co-publishing/grand rights deal with international music publisher Imagem.

Mihaela has written two poetry books Rage and Love and Wicked Clone or how to get reborn. Gabriela acted in the film National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj (2006) and in the television episode "Hothouse" of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. They were semi-finalists on America's Got Talent and acted in the Russian-American film Lyubov v bolshom gorode (No Love in the Big City). They performed in the musical The Two Orphans, Dumitru Radu Popescu's Two Sisters, Eugene Ionesco's The Future is in Eggs and America Alive; and they finished 7th in the Romanian qualifiers for Eurovision Song Contest 2006.

They were born in Romania, received green cards for extraordinary artistic abilities and became Americans. They speak English, French, German and Romanian and sing in seven different languages. They are members of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers). They live in New York City, where they teach "Hip Hop Belly Dancing," ranked best-in-class by Time Out New York. They are working on an album with American music manager David Sonenberg.

Background

Romanian childhood

Their father, Grid,[1] a writer,[2] filmmaker[1] and critic,[3] worked for 30 years as a film producer and screen writer at the National Cinematography and the Romanian National Television.[2] Their mother, Violeta,[1] a writer,[4][5] teacher of world literature[6] and translator of Mongolian,[7][8] Russian[9] and American[10] literature, wrote Complementary theatrical visions: Chekhov and Gorky, her PhD thesis in world literature, which imposes the concept of artistic complementarity.[11] Their older brother, Vlad, is a game producer.[6]

In 1985, they were born[12][13] in Brașov, Transylvania, Romania.[14] At the age of six, they began studying piano, guitar,[15] canto and dance.[6] At the age of twelve, they debut on Christmas Eve on Romanian Television with the carol "Colinde, colinde," written by Mihai Eminescu, generally regarded as Romania's greatest poet.[16] They regularly performed on German and European TV shows and received media support from Bild.[6] They speak English, French, German and Romanian and sing in seven different languages.[6]

They graduated from the Theatre Department of the National University of Theatre and Film "I.L.Caragiale" (named in honor of Ion Luca Caragiale) in Bucharest, Romania,[17][18] with the highest[16] score of 10,[19] as the first twin actresses in Romanian theater.[19] After graduation, they went to Germany to record "I do not need Georgie Clooney, I do not need David Beckham," composed by their producer, Dieter Bohlen[19] and to study acting.[17][18]

American adulthood

They continued their study of acting in New York.[17][18] In 2008, they received green cards (United States of America lawful permanent residency) for extraordinary artistic abilities.[20][21] In the United States, they appeared on "The Tyra Banks Show," “TMZ,” “The Happy Hour” (FOX Business) and “Hair Battle Spectacular” (Oxygen (TV channel)); in advertisements for Dell Computers, NY Knicks and Wodka Gorbatschow and in music videos with Danny Aiello, Lindsay Lohan, 50 Cent and Kanye West.[6] In October 2013, became American citizens, performing The Star-Spangled Banner during their oath ceremony.[22][23]

In August 2011, they signed a worldwide, multi-year co-publishing/grand rights deal with international music publisher and label Imagem.[24][25] Imagem Music, a leader in pop, is a subsidiary of Imagem Music Group, co-founded by CEO André de Raaff and the #1 independent music publishing company in the world.[24] Imagem has contracts with Phil Collins, Ludacris and Genesis.[26]

They speak English, French, German and Romanian and sing in seven different languages.[6] They are members of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers).[27] They live in New York City,[6] where they created and teach "Hip Hop Belly Dancing" at a dance studio in the Flatiron District in New York City.[28][29] Time Out New York ranked "Hip Hop Belly Dance" as best-in-class.[29] Their class crosses traditional belly dancing with modern hip-hop dance, teaching a fun dance routine while focusing on building sexy arms and lean legs.[28] They are working on an album with American music manager DAS Communications' David Sonenberg, Peter Zizzo, Rockwilder, DJ Paul Oakenfold, and Swizz Beatz.[24][25]

Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical

Description

Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical, Indiggo's Off Broadway show, opened September 21, 2018, at the John Cullum Theater of the American Theatre of Actors with five performances a week.[30] The show is based on Mihaela's 500-page bestseller Wicked Clone or how to deal with the evil,[26][31] a cinema novel.[32][33] The original storyline, based on a conflict between the twins,[26] begins in 15th century Transylvania, with the birth of identical twin sisters Mihaela and Gabriela, and tracks Mihaela, whose desire to be human and loved takes her to modern day New York City; and Gabriela, who ventures through time and space to return her sister to her vampiric heritage.[31]

Working on their project since 2010,[34] they wrote, composed, choreographed, designed and perform their show.[31] Mihaela made the costumes.[26] The 90 minute[31] show is a blend of musical theatre and film.[32][34] It features a mystical story,[35] "fearless" dancing,[35] film sequences from beginning to end, with much of the film shot in their native Romania,[36] and 21 "immortal" songs[35] from gypsy pop to theatrical hip hop,[31] including "La La La."[26] and "I Am Like God", which invites the audience onstage to sing along.[36]

Review

City Guide’s Theatre Editor Griffin Miller describes the show as “a rare piece of visual and audio creativity” with "totally Transylvanian vogue" costumes, "supernatural ambience, unique staging and ... immortal" performances that "turns the tables on tradition by telling ‘the story of a vampire bitten by a human being,’” and says, "this wildly inventive show—involving singing, dancing, time-travel, film, and a symphonic soundtrack—beckons theatregoers to the underbelly of Nuevo Entertainment."[31]

Background

They are the first twins to play twins off Broadway.[26] Explaining the eponymous characters,[37] Mihaela says, "For the first time the heroes of a novel are heroes in real life, attempting to change the world just like the characters are trying to."[38] They opened earlier productions October 29, 2017, at the St. Luke's Theatre[36] and March 8, 2018, at the Davenport Theatre.[37] They performed earlier versions at the Elektra Theatre on September 8, 2016,[32][39] The Bitter End on July 10, 2013[40] and Ensemble Studio Theatre on June 21, 2012.[15]

Music

Wicked Clone (2018)

On September 21, 2018, they released a cast album of 25 original songs, running time 1 hour 32 minutes, through Broadway Records,[41] which they wrote, arranged and produced.[42] They play the piano, the guitar and the drums and sing in different harmonies.[42] Broadway Records announced an October 5th physical release.[43][44] Broadway Records, a record label launched in summer 2012, focuses on cast albums from Broadway and Off-Broadway musical theatre.[45] The album has 4 opening songs, 19 songs from the show (from "La La La," sampled in Watch the Throne, to "I am Like God") and 2 closing songs.[46]

"La La La" (2011)

In August 2011, rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West, “kings of hip hop," released their first collaborative album, ‘’Watch the Throne’’.[47] They describe Indiggo as “ambassadors of the great Romanian tradition.” [27][47] The New York Times describes the first half of ’’Murder to Excellence” as among the most explicitly political music either artist has made.[47] A sample of Indiggo’s “La La La” opens “Murder to Excellence.”[48] Complex Music's Kathy Iandola says “La La La” is a "tribal pop track" that becomes "haunting" as Jay-Z and Kanye West discuss the rise in murder rates and black on black crime.[48]

On December 16, 2011, DAS Label, Inc. released Indiggo's "La La La."[49] Complex Music, a New York City youth culture magazine reporting on trends in music with a focus on hip hop, ranks Indiggo’s “La La La” 18th on the “Best White Girl Vocal Samples in Rap History.”[48] The New York Times' Jon Caramanica describes "La La La" as “moving.”[47]

"Be My Boyfriend" (2006)

In 2006, without a management company or record label, Indiggo persuaded Germany's TV personality and musician Dieter Bohlen to write "Be My Boyfriend."[50] On February 24, they qualified for the National Final of the Romanian qualifications for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 and, on February 26, performing "Be My Boyfriend," they finished 7th.[51] On March 10, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Ariola, released the pop/rock CD single “Be My Boyfriend,”[52] which entered the charts in Germany.[53]

"Love Struck" (2007)

Of the five songs Indiggo submitted for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, two were their compositions and the other three were compositions by German Dieter Bohlen, Swedish Thomas G:son and Maltese Philip Vella.[54] Out of 259 songs, “Love Struck,” composed by Thomas G:son and written by Gerard James Borg, was one of the 24 songs selected for the semi-finals.[55][56]

Indiggo (2000) and "Hip Hop Jam" (2003)

MediaPro Music released their first CD album Indiggo (2000),[15][57] containing several hit singles: "Nu-mi pasa," "Clar de luna," "Am eu grija de mine;"[58] and selling in over 20 European countries, including Austria, Germany and Switzerland.[15] Their unique style, inspired by Romanian folklore, makes them "ambassadors of the great Romanian traditions."[15] Indiggo's first Europe-wide single, "Hip Hop Jam," (BROS Music, 2003), a song with Cuban influences[59] produced by David Brandes, entered the charts in Germany.[60]

Other artistic accomplishments

Poetry

In 2006, Mihaela published her first poetry book Rage and Love.[6][61] In 2015, she published her second poetry book Wicked Clone or how to get reborn.[62]

Stage

In 2006, they played the leads Louise and Henriette in the musicalThe Two Orphans[15] at the Casandra Theater,[19] the theatre of the "L. L. Caragiale" National Theater and Cinema Art University,[63] winning the Grand Prix at the Graduates' Gala.[19] Monica Andronescu in Jurnalul National describes the show as a parody of a typical romance where an abandoned child is found after years of suffering and wandering. She continues, "An extraordinary explosion of energy and talent sums up the showThe Two Orphan … It is worth highlighting the interpretation of the two orphans, Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea, who prove, besides acting talent, real musical skills." [63]

After seeing their performance, Romanian playwright Dumitru Radu Popescu, former chairman of the Romanian Writers' Union,[64] wrote a play for them, Two Sisters, published in the award-winning[65] volume Mr. Fluture and Mrs. Fluture.[15] Later, Romanian director Mihai Maniutiu cast Mihaela and Gabriela in Eugene Ionesco's The Future is in Eggs.[15][66] Romanian Alexa Visarion directed them as the Twin Towers in America Alive, a show in memory of September 11, 2001.[15][67]

Film

Gabriela acted in the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj (2006)[15][68] as "Taj's Sister." In 2009, they acted together in the Russian-American film Lyubov v bolshom gorode[15][68] (No Love in the Big City[69][70]), as "Bliznyashka No. 1." and "Bliznyashka No. 2."[70][71]

Television

In 2008, Gabriela appeared as "Veronica Pankovich" on the episode "Hothouse" of the television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which first aired on NBC on January 13, 2009.[72][73] Later in 2008, they were semi-finalists on Season 3 of America's Got Talent, an American television reality show talent competition.[74]
