The series was created by Corinne Kingsbury for The CW, to debut during the 2018–19 television season. The series centers on Murphy, a 'flawed and irreverent young woman who just happens to be blind', who is the only witness to the murder of her drug-dealing friend, Tyson, however, when the police dismiss her story, she sets out with her dog, Pretzel, to find the killer.[10][6] On January 30, 2018, The CW officially ordered the In the Dark script to pilot.[5] On May 11, 2018, The CW ordered a first season for the show.[11]

Casting

On March 2, 2018, Perry Mattfield was cast in the starring role as Murphy, a young, blind woman, who finds her drug-dealing friend, Tyson, deceased in an alley. Murphy is described as a disaffected, hard-drinking, promiscuous mess who pushes away anyone who cares for her, even her roommate and best friend, Jess. At the same time, Brooke Markham and Keston John were cast in co-starring roles as Jess, who is described as a well-meaning, nurturing veterinarian who is somewhat overly protective of Murphy, much to Murphy’s occasional irritation, and Darnell, Tyson's cousin, who is described as a local drug dealer, who believes that Murphy is a sloppy, blind white girl who is imagining things, however grows fonder of her and joins Murphy in her quest for justice.[1] One week later, Kathleen York and Derek Webster were cast in series regular roles Joy, Murphy's joyless, cynical mother, who has given up hope that Murphy will ever make anything of her life, and Hank, Joy's husband, who is described as an earnest, well-intentioned man who never loses patience with his daughter, no matter how wildly and irresponsibly she behaves.[3] On March 12, 2018, Austin Nichols was cast in the final series regular role as Dean, who is described as a salt-of-the-earth cop who is called in to investigate Murphy's claims because he has a blind daughter.[12] On July 13, 2018, Rich Sommer was cast as Dean, replacing Nichols who was in the original pilot.[13]

Filming

Filming for the series will take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.[14] Production on the pilot started on March 12, 2018, and wrapped up on March 28.[15]
