Imran Ismail (Urdu: عمران اسماعیل; born 1 January 1966) is a Pakistani businessman and politician who is the current and 33rd Governor of Sindh, in office since 27 August 2018. Before being appointed Governor of Sindh, he remained a member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh for a brief period in August 2018.

Early life and education

He was born on 1 January 1966[1] in Karachi, Pakistan.[2][3]

He completed his matriculation level education from Cantonment Public School and then joined the Government Commerce College[1] from where he completed his intermediate education.[4] He graduated from Government National College (Karachi)[2] and moved to Italy for a bachelor’s degree in leather technology.[3] However he returned to Pakistan without completing his bachelor’s degree.[5] In 2018, reports surfaced that Ismail had never graduated from any university.[6]

According to documents submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan in 2018, Ismail declared Intermediate education as his highest academic qualification.[5][7][8][9]

He is a businessman by profession and owns a juice factory.[1] In 2010, a police case was registered against Ismail for embezzlement of Rs 4 million. Ismail was declared absconder in the case.[5]

Political career

He is one of the founding members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).[1]

He ran for the seat of the National Assembly of Pakistan as a candidate of PTI from Constituency NA-246 (Karachi-VIII) in by-election held in April 2015 but was unsuccessful.[10] He received 24,821 votes and lost the seat to Kunwar Naveed Jamil.[11]

He was elected to the Provincial Assembly of Sindh as candidate of PTI from Consitutuency PS-111 (Karachi-XXIII) in Pakistani general election, 2018.[12][13]

On 6 August 2018, he was named by Imran Khan as Governor of Sindh.[13][14] On 11 August 2018, he was formally nominated by PTI for the same office.[15] On 13 August 2018, he took oath as member of the Sindh Assembly.[16] The same day, he reaffirmed the PTI's commitment to demolish the security walls around Karachi's Bilawal House.[17] The next day, he denied that he had made this statement and said "I have made no statement about demolishing the external walls of Bilawal House. I cannot even think of doing such a thing".[18] On 23 August 2018, he was appointed as Governor of Sindh.[19] His appointment as Governor drew criticism from academic experts who claimed Ismail, for being intermediate pass only, does not have the necessary academic qualifications for the office by arguing that Governor office makes him the chancellor of all state-run educational institution.[20][5] On 27 August 2018, he resigned from his Sindh Assembly seat[21] and took oath as Governor of Sindh.[22]
