Ignatius Behnam Hadliyo, also known as Behnam of Hidl, was the Patriarch of Antioch, and head of the Syriac Orthodox Church from 1445 until his death in 1454.[1]

Biography

Behnam, son of John, was born in the village of Hidl (also spelt Hedel), near Esfes, into the Habbo Kanni family, which was originally from the village of Bartulli. He became a monk at the Monastery of Mor Gabriel and was later ordained as a priest there. In 1404, Behnam was consecrated as Maphrian, upon which he assumed the name Basilius, and was elevated to Patriarch of Mardin as Ignatius on 24 July 1412. Following the death of Patriarch Baselius IV Simon, Behnam convinced the diocese of Antioch to proclaim him as legitimate patriarch and, in 1445, he was consecrated as Patriarch of Antioch. He was a prolific poet and great writer, composing a total of eleven odes.[1]
