Ice Creamusume (アイスクリー娘。, Aisu Kurīmusume) (Chinese: 冰淇淋少女組。; pinyin: Bīngqílín Shàonǚ Zǔ; Wade–Giles: Pingch'ilin Shaonü Tsu) was an idol pop group based in Taiwan signed under Forward Music as part of the Hello! Project name.[1] They were Hello! Project's first overseas group and the flagship band of Hello! Project Taiwan.[2] The members consisted of Wu Si-hsuan ("Shen Shen"), Chung An-chi ("Anchī"), Tseng Te-ping ("Pei Pei"), Chao Kuo-jung ("Youko"), Chiu Tsui-ling ("Rei Rei"), and Ku Yun ("Gū-chan"), with each member officially represented by an ice cream flavor.[3][4][5][6][7][8] Since their debut, the group has released music in both Japanese and Chinese before disbanding in 2010.

History

In 2007, Japanese idol supergroup Hello! Project held the Hello! Project New Star Audition to recruit members for a new girl group based in Taiwan in an attempt to expand towards the Chinese market.[9][10] The results were announced in September 2008, where six winners were selected.[11] The winners were then taken to Japan for three months to undertake singing and dancing lessons as well as to record their first mini-album.[12][2] As Hello! Project's management had decided their debut in Japan depended on Taiwan's reception of the group, their Taiwanese label set up a blog on December 18, 2008, which managed to gain 240,000 hits by January without advertising.[13]

Each of the six members were also given Japanese stage names and official flavors to represent them instead of colors: Wu was nicknamed "Shen Shen" (シェンシェン) and was represented by blueberry;[3] Chung was nicknamed "Anchī" (アンチー) and was represented by coffee;[4] Tseng was nicknamed "Pei Pei" (ペイペイ) and was represented by vanilla;[5] Chao was nicknamed "Youko" (ヨウコ) and was represented by strawberry;[6] Chiu was nicknamed "Rei Rei" (レイレイ) and was represented by mint chocolate;[7] and Ku was nicknamed "Gū-chan" (グーチャン) and was represented by mango.[8] Wu was also selected as the group's leader,[3] while Chung was made the sub-leader.[4]

The music video for "Love Debut", the first track on the album, was released in Taiwan on December 31, 2008. On January 9, 2009, Ice Creamusume released their first mini-album 1st Best! in Taiwan, while it was released in Japan on January 18. Ice Creamusume performed both the Chinese and Japanese versions of "Love Debut" on the streets to promote the mini-album.[14] On January 31 and February 1, 2009, they made their Japanese debut at the Hello Pro Awards '09: Elder Club Graduation Commemoration Special concert, performing "Love Debut (Japanese Version)."[15]

On February 4, 2009, a music video for their second mini-album title track, a cover version of "Love Revolution 21", was released. The music video was shot in front of a green screen and was scheduled for 18 hours, but it took only two hours to shoot.[16] The music video for Ice Creamusume's third title track, "There Can't Be Love on a Planet Without Rain, Right?", was released in March 2009.[17][18]

In spite of promotions, Ice Creamusume's sales performed below expectations and they failed to attract an audience.[19] Ice Creamusume made their last appearance as a group in July 2009 at the Hello! Project Concert 2009 Summer: Hello! Champloo concert, performing "Love Debut (Japanese Version)" with Morning Musume's Junjun and Linlin filling in for Tseng and Ku.[20] Afterwards, they became inactive for the rest of 2009 and were dropped as a music act in 2010.
