I Can See Your Voice (abbreviated ICSYV), stylized as I Can See Your Voice: Mystery Music Game Show (Hangul: 너의 목소리가 보여; RR: Neo-eui Moksori-ga Bo-yeo; MR: Nŏŭi Moksorika Poyŏ) is an international mystery music game show franchise. It is originated of South Korean program of the same name, developed by CJ E&M Corporation and Signal Entertainment Group and created by South Korean television producer Lee Seon-young.[1][2]

It became a worldwide success and many countries were begun to adopt their own versions since 2016.[3] It was nominated for "Best Non-Scripted Entertainment Program" category at the 44th International Emmy Awards.[4]

Gameplay

The guest artist(s) must attempt to guess six up to seven contestants who are good singers and who are bad singers without hearing them singing. They will also help with a group of panelists under the Tone-deaf Detective Team (also called SING-vestigators).

After they eliminated one to two contestants in each round, they will perform using its singing ability at the Stage of Truth. The last individual or group standing will gets to sing a duet alongside guest artist(s).

If the winner(s) is a good singer(s), they will give a chance to release the song alongside guest artist(s) as a digital single. If the winner(s) is a bad singer(s), they will receive a monetary prize.[5][6]

Simple format

The original format had its objective to must the guest artist(s) eliminate bad singers on each round before they did choose the good singer to duet-perform.[6]

Versus format

Made by Vietnamese counterpart show Giọng ải giọng ai, two guest artists face each other and the elimination order must be altered by opposing guest artists.

The winner will be determined by two guest artists that has duet-performed separately, if:

▶ Both of two guest artists has chosen both good singers or bad singers; or
▶ One guest artist that has chosen a good singer and other one that has chosen a bad singer.

Format variations

Guest artists

A solo or group of guest artists, served as player(s), which are composed of predominantly singers or recording artists. Otherwise, guest artists may include non-singers.

Encore guest artists

Several guest artists that has already been played in the past, they were returned to play again giving their second chance. This has been existed in some franchises.

Crossover guest artists

Some of guest artists that has been played on their 'home' franchise, then they played again on several 'road' franchises. Notable example guest artists were Got7 and Cakra Khan.

Hosts and SING-vestigators

Every ICSYV franchise, this entire show's 'residents' was composed of a host and a team of SING-vestigators, but there are some twists:

Resident guest artists

For no reason, the host or SING-vestigator has allowed to play the game as a 'guest artist' in some occasions. ICSYVPH host Luis Manzano became a co-guest artist with Vilma Santos-Recto, despite him for 'bad singing'. Former SEE-cret songers have also played them such as Hwang Chi-yeul.

SEE-cret songers

There are up to seven individuals or groups standing on a platform, referred to as SEE-cret songers, with their own aliases to make them keep secret. They do not speak until the final reveal.

Themesets

There were also a set of SEE-cret songers that have its own unique theme that they're contributed by a guest artist(s). An notable example is an all-male themeset of SEE-cret songers for Vice Ganda in the Philippine franchise.

Foreigners

Notable foreign SEE-cret songers were performed there such as "good singers" Joseph Busto (from United States)[7], Laura Emmitt (from United Kingdom), and Sephy Francisco (from Philippines);[8] and "bad singers" were existed especially Maria (from Brazil).[9]

Groups

Groups were also performed there since South Korean's third season. Notable "good singer" groups were included Soulstar, Maytree, CODE-V and EXP EDITION.

Stage of Truth

On its final glimpse, the centerstage of revelation which eliminated SEE-cret songers or having them duet will have to perform elsewhere by just revealing the singing ability. Before that, they will have a sentimental speech and then after the performance, they will introduced to everyone by a complete name of an individual or a group.

Other talents like rapping, dancing, and instrument playing are exempted as deciding factors, but it depends whom are considered confirm or disprove their identity.

'Good voice gone bad' performance twists

Another variant of SEE-cret songer's performance is to firstly sing with an own voice but in a lip-sync manner, then the backup vocalist arrives and the SEE-cret songer goes 'bad singing', resulting them as troll performance. Some examples were Hong Dong-woo[10] and Park Se-eun.[11]

'Combination' group performance twists

There are also groups that were mixed of good and bad SEE-cret songers. However, all members must be able to sing to considered them as good singers. All of the group's members can sing except one that can't sing well, unless they're still considered them as bad singers. Some examples were the trio of Goo Seul-yi, Yeo Na-im and Kim Jeong-yeon (known as Threevichi)[12]; or the duo of Yoo Ga-yeon and Han Hye-young.[13]

Round and clues

The following list of rounds that has been existed since the game show's premiere:[14]

Visual Rounds

Singer's Pose (known as Stop, Looks, and Listen)

The guest artist(s) must look at every contestant based on its appearance and singing visual. They will show a muted video of each contestant's singing that reveals only 0.3 seconds of their singing voice.[6]

  • In the Indonesian version, it is divided into two separated rounds which is canonically called the "Pose Round" and the "Silent Video Round".
Double Identities

Identify the real identity of a skilled vocalist on the left side, or a tone-deaf vocalist on the right which is matched for designated contestant.[14]

Lip-sync Rounds

Solo Lip-sync (known as The Voice is Synching)

Identify the skilled vocalists who are lip-syncing to their own voice and the tone-deaf vocalists who are lip-syncing to someone else's voice that have their similar voice tone.[6]

Double Lip-sync

Both the contestant and lip-sync substitute appeared together and they are lip-syncing to the same song, but only one is the lip-sync owner.[14]

Evidence Rounds

Proof Evidence (known as I Like to Prove It! Prove It!)

They will provide proofs of each contestant's singing ability (i.e. photo, video, certificates, etc). Skilled vocalists had their own evidences while the tone-deaf vocalists had their evidences fabricated.

Listening Evidence (known as Let's Play by a Hear)

The panelist must hear the defender's singing voice using its headphones first. Afterwards, he or she must defend and convince the contestant (as defender) to seek their evidence.[14]
