Hysiae (Argolis)

Hysiae was a garrison town in Argolis, southern Greece during the archaic period. It was located to the south-west of Argos and east of Tegea, not far from the Argive border with Laconia. Hysiae was the scene of two battles in antiquity. The first was fought c.669 BC between the Spartans and the Argives, who won to repulse a Spartan invasion of Argolis.[1] The second battle in 417 BC was between the same two opponents as part of the Peloponnesian War and resulted in a decisive Spartan victory. The Spartans captured Hysiae and destroyed it; all captured male citizens were executed.[2]
