Hydrock is an award-winning multidisciplinary engineering design consultancy that advises clients on projects in the built environment and infrastructure sectors.
With headquarters in Almondsbury, Hydrock has offices across the United Kingdom in Bristol, London, Glasgow, Cardiff, Camborne, Plymouth, Southampton, Taunton, Stoke-on-Trent, Northampton, Harwell, Gloucester, Manchester and Birmingham.
Founded in 1995 by Dr Brian McConnell, Hydrock employs over 400 people working on projects across the UK and has won both industry recognition and many awards for its entrepreneurial approach to engineering. For the past 4 years Hydrock has ranked within The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For, and as of 2018 has consecutively been within the top 40.
History
Hydrock has grown through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions. Hydrock Group Ltd consists of Hydrock Consultants Ltd, which provides multidisciplinary engineering design consultancy services to both the public and private sectors.
In 2008, Hydrock Consultants Ltd acquired the civil and structural engineering practice Structures1.
In 2009, Hydrock Consultants Ltd acquired the transport engineering practice Byways & Highways Ltd.
In 2014, Hydrock Group Ltd acquired a stake in Nuclear Management Consultancy Ltd, a specialist nuclear consultancy practice. In 2018 Hydrock purchased the remaining shares and now owns 100% of Nuclear Management Consultancy Ltd.

Services
Hydrock specialises in a wide range of engineering services, including structural and civil engineering, building performance engineering (including mechanical and electrical engineering), transport and highways engineering, infrastructure engineering, land quality assessments and geotechnical engineering, and a specialist nuclear consultancy offering that advises on safety, environmental and engineering standards in the nuclear sector.
Notable projects
Hullavington Airfield: Hydrock provided building performance engineering services on Hangar 86 at Dyson’s new centre for research and development.
Hinkley Point C: Hydrock acted as the safety report lead and the quality lead to bring together the third version of the site-specific pre-construction safety report for Hinkley Point C and continue to support EDF NNB.
South Bank, Leeds: Hydrock provided multidisciplinary services to support the successful planning application for a £210m residential-led regeneration scheme.
UK Hydrographic Office, Taunton: Hydrock provided building services and structural engineering services for this 11,000sqm office development. Hydrock also provided transportation services to support the planning application.
Hinckley National Rail Freight Interchange: Hydrock provided full multi-disciplinary services through the full consultation process for this Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP). Castle Park View, Bristol: Hydrock provided multi-disciplinary services to support the planning application for a 26-storey tower in Bristol city centre which will deliver 375 new homes and are now engaged through to full detailed design and construction.
Chatham Waters, Kent: Hydrock provided M&E design, fire engineering, acoustics, air quality and microclimate assessment at design stage for an apartment development which is set to transform the historic waterfront.
Metrolink extension, Manchester: Hydrock carried out site investigation works for the £350m Metrolink extension from Manchester to Trafford Park. Services included remediation strategy, materials management planning, controlled waters risk assessments and regulatory liaison.
Bristol Airport: Hydrock is a long-term trusted advisor to Bristol Airport, supporting their phased renovation and extension. Work includes the East and West Terminal extensions, car parking facilities, a hotel and administration facilities.
