Plot

Daniel (Timothée Chalamet), an awkward teenager gets in over his head dealing drugs while falling for his business partner's enigmatic sister during one scorching summer in Cape Cod. Daniel's mother sends him to live with his aunt, after his father died. He isn't excited to live there at first, but soon he meets Hunter Strawberry, the bad boy in town. After a while, they become business partners in selling drugs from Dex. Even though Hunter forbids him to see his little sister, McKayla, Daniel can't help himself. He and McKayla start dating, even though both the Strawberry siblings don't know it from each other. Selling weed becomes very profitable and Daniel and Hunter start to make a lot of money. Daniel however wants more, he wants to start selling cocaine without letting it Dex know. Eventually, Dex finds out and wants Hunter to kill Daniel. Hunter however tells Daniel to run and never come back, instead of killing him. When Dex finds Hunter he kills him instead. McKayla sees her killed brother and flees town. Daniel has never returned.

Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Hot Summer Nights holds an approval rating of 42% based on 36 reviews, with an average score of 5.1/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Hot Summer Nights is easy on the eyes and clearly indebted to some great films, but its strengths — including a charismatic young cast — are often outweighed by its uninspired story."[12] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 44 out of 100, based on 18 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[13]

Michael Hoffman, writing for Consequence of Sound, praised the film, calling it "A brazen anti-coming-of-age thriller that oozes with all the right confidence, chutzpah, and passion."[14] Conversely, Indiewire critic David Ehrlich criticized the script as "empty," and referred to the film as "A sweaty pastiche that shares its protagonist’s desire to be all things to all people, only to wind up losing any sense of itself along the way."[15]
