Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is a 238-bed not-for-profit community hospital and trauma center in Valencia, California, in the Santa Clarita Valley. It was founded in 1975.[1] Named after businessman Henry Mayo Newhall, the facility is a longstanding landmark in the Santa Clarita Valley. Henry Mayo has been designated as a four-star hospital with The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).[2][3] More than 40 years after first opening its doors, Henry Mayo is home to 480 dedicated medical staff members, over 1,900 employees, and more than 300 skilled volunteers. Affiliated medical staff includes physicians with expertise in over 71 specialties and subspecialties. The mission of the hospital is to improve the health of the community through compassion and excellence in healthcare services.[4] Henry Mayo is accredited by The Joint Commission.[5]

Fitness center

Henry Mayo Fitness and Health is a state-of-the-art facility that offers personal training, group fitness classes, and basic gym amenities. Committed to helping community members achieve optimal health, the facility’s amenities and trainers are available at affordable membership rates. The facility acts as a total health & fitness resource for members, providing safe training techniques, wellness education, and nutritional counseling for all interested clients.[6]  Henry Mayo Fitness and Health also houses Henry Mayo’s outpatient physical therapy clinic and two commumity education classrooms. Almost all the community education classrooms are free and open to the community.[7] Henry Mayo Fitness and Health is part of a growing national trend toward medical fitness facilities that are integrated within larger health delivery systems. About half of these members have at least one chronic health condition. Two key elements differentiate such centers from commercial gyms, said association president Bob Boone: medical oversight that aligns with the parent health system’s current clinical approach (and broader national clinical thinking), and programs that connect with other types of care the system provides.[8] All of the training staff are required to have bachelor's degrees in exercise science, kinesiology, physiology, along with a medically related personal training certification.[9]

Diabetes prevention program

The PreventT2 program is designed to help prediabetics make lifestyle changes that will prevent or significantly delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes. This year-long program involves: weekly meetings for the first 6 months, monthly meetings for the second 6 months, CDC-approved curriculum, a trained lifestyle coach, full access to Henry Mayo Fitness and Health, and the support of other patients interested in preventing Type 2 diabetes. The program’s overall goal is to help patients lose weight, reduce stress, and become more physically active so they can avoid Type 2 diabetes in the future. The PreventT2 Program is part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).[10]

Disaster resource center

Henry Mayo is part of the Los Angeles County Disaster Resource Center (DRC) network, which is comprises 13 trauma centers, hospitals, and management base stations located throughout Los Angeles.[11] Every facility in the DRC network is equipped to immediately respond to any type of major disaster that might occur. Team members are tested on an ongoing basis and they are continually put through rigorous training sessions and frequent drills to ensure they are fully prepared for any type of large-scale disaster or emergency that may arise.[12]

More than 300 dedicated members of the community volunteer their time and skills to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.
