Newark–Heath Airport (ICAO: KVTA, FAA LID: VTA) is a public airport located in Heath, Ohio. It is three miles (5 km) southwest of the central business district of Newark, a city in Licking County, Ohio, United States. It is owned by the Licking County Regional Airport Authority.[1] Newark-Heath was formerly the Newark Air Force Base once basing the 2802nd Inertial Guidance and Calibration Group now known as the Air Force Metrology and Calibration Program Office which moved there in April, 1962. The then 2802nd Inertial Guidance and Calibration Group, the primary calibration lab of the USAF and the Air Force Measurement Standards Laboratories was completed at the end of 1962. When completed the Newark Air Force base consisted of four levels of underground laboratory space measuring an area of 20,000 square feet. Privatization of Newark AFB began in the 90's and was officially closed in September, 1996 and the facilities were given to the Licking County Port Authority by October 1st, 1996.[2][3] Newark-Heath currently has a McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom II S.N. 64-0683 on static display.[4]
Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, Newark–Heath Airport is assigned VTA by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA.[5]
