Poison is the upcoming second studio album by American rapper and producer Swizz Beatz. It is Beatz' first album as a lead artist since his 2007 album One Man Band Man.[1] The album is scheduled for release on November 2, 2018 by Epic Records, and became available for pre-order on September 14, 2018. Poison features collaborations with Nas, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, and Young Thug, among others. The music video for the song "Pistol On My Side (P.O.M.S.)", featuring Lil Wayne and Alicia Keys on piano, was released on September 14, 2018.

Background

Swizz Beatz first announced his second studio album in late 2007, shortly after Swizz Beatz's debut album, One Man Band Man (2007) was released. Although it debuted at number 7 on the US Billboard 200, despite a positive response to its upbeat production the album received mixed criticism towards its self-indulgent themes and the lack of guest appearances.[2] In an interview with Format Magazine, Swizz Beatz stated that he was already working hard on his second studio album, at the time under the title Life After the Party.[3] However, in 2010 the album was renamed on three occasions: initially, the album was renamed King Issues,[4] but later on the same day it was renamed to The Perception of Greatness.[4] After initially turning to fans to help decide on an album title, Swizz Beatz eventually announced, whilst in a New York City recording session with Mary J. Blige, the title would be Haute Living, as he felt "it's the perfect phrase to state what he's all about".[5] In an exclusive listening session with Rap-Up.com, Swizz Beatz premiered fourteen tracks set to appear on the album, including previously mentioned track "V.I.P. Chillin" and also several previously unheard songs, including "Dance Like a White Girl" and "Instructions", among several others.[6] He also premiered unfinished versions of several music videos made for the album, revealing that the Reebok-commissioned video for "International Party" cost $1.4 million to shoot,[6] and that the video for "You Stay on My Mind" was shot in Dubai: he also revealed that he persuaded the Sheikh to let him use the airspace for only a dollar.[6]

Beatz credited J. Cole as executive producer alongside him as he advised him on song selection and album release.[1][7] Beatz had recorded 70 songs for the album and used 10.[8] He said he removed songs that were potential radio and chart hits.[9] Three of the songs not included on the album are a track featuring Kanye West and Bono, another featuring Bruno Mars, and a collaboration with Jay Z, Naz, DMX, and Jadakiss that Beatz had previewed at a DJ battle with Just Blaze in 2017.[10][9] Beatz said that the latter song will be released "when the timing is right".[9] On the collaborations with other artists, he stated: "I handed all the creativity on the album to the artists, in their comfort zone. I didn’t make it about Swizz. It’s my album, but I’m a producer, and it needs to be about the artists that are on it".[11] The album artwork, titled "End of Empire", was created by Los Angeles-based artist Cleon Peterson, and represents "upending the system, taking power back from the corrupt and fighting for justice."[12] Producers on the album include Beatz, AraabMuzik, MusicMan Ty and Avery Chambliss.[13]

The track list and album artwork was released by Beatz on September 13, 2018.[1][14] "Pistol On My Side (P.O.M.S.)", featuring rapper Lil Wayne and Alicia Keys on piano, was the first song released, with its music video premiering on September 14, 2018.[15] The album became available for pre-order at midnight September 14, 2018.[14][7] It is scheduled for release on November 2, 2018 by Epic Records.[14]
