Hao Ge (Chinese: 郝歌; pinyin: Hǎo Gē) is the Chinese stage name of Nigerian-born singer Uwechue Emmanuel. He rose to fame through a performance with Han Hong on the CCTV New Year's Gala and has emerged as one of the most notable foreign singers in China.[1]

Career

He began his singing career in the choir at Lagos' House on the Rock Pentecostal church in Nigeria.[1] He received a degree in engineering, and began to pursue a singing career, which led his father to disown him. Before getting his career off the ground in China, he was a country music singer and astrophysicist by profession.[1] He has a graduate degree in Mathematics from the University of Monrovia. In 2001, a friend of his, Li Yayu, started his singing career in China by inviting him to perform in hotels and bars throughout Henan and Hubei.[1] At the Big Easy Bar in Beijing, Hao Ge was discovered by Liu Huan, a well-known music producer.[1]

He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese (Hao Ge said that he uses Pinyin to learn Mandarin) and is applying for Chinese citizenship. He was asked to sing in the Beijing Olympics, Summer 2008. Hao Ge also travels all over China to perform and do television shows. He can be seen on CCTV-9.

YouTube

On YouTube, one can see Hao Ge perform four Maoist songs solo. One is 'Mao's Words Kept in Heart', uploaded by 2222axe.[2] Less viewed is 'Honghu Water and Liuyang River',[3] while 'Learn from Lei Feng's Good Example'[4] is better watched and 'Without the Communist Party There Would Be No New China'[5] is his most popular song on the website. A recording of his performance with Huang Ying of "Red Shines on the Mountains" and one of his meeting fans in Nanchang have also been uploaded by 2222axe.[2]

In the videos of his solo singing, other than 'Learn From Lei Feng's Good Example', the date, presumably of performance, is given in Chinese along with the web address 'www.zhimapk.com', which gives a '404 Not Found' error. In these videos he refers to himself as Hao Di rather than Hao Ge, replacing 'Brother' with 'Little Brother' to indicate respect for those watching. He introduces himself in this way in the each song, often with a comment. In 'Mao's Words Kept In Heart',[2] for example, he encouraged good relations between Africa and China, presumably due to his Nigerian birth. According to the dates given, 'Mao's Words Kept In Heart' was performed on 18 May 2011,[2] 'Without the Communist Party There Would Be No New China' on 22 May,[5] 'Honghu Water and Liuyang River' on 25 May,[3] with the performance date of 'Learn From Lei Feng's Good Example' not being given at any point in the video. His conversations in Nanchang were indicated to have been had on 28 June 2011 in the same way, with people singing lines from the songs he sung, which indicates that he had a substantial fan-base at that time.[2]
