Halifax is a town in the Shire of Hinchinbrook, Queensland, Australia,[2] on the Herbert River, 15 kilometres (9 mi) northeast of Ingham.

At the 2011 census, Halifax had a population of 431.[1]

Early history

August Anderssen, a blacksmith, purchased the land in 1880[3] after which time the land was turned into sugar plantations.

Halifax Post Office opened on 23 August 1886.[4]

Many homes in Halifax were flooded following extremely heavy rain in March 2018.[5]

Local facilities

The town has a town hall and regular community markets. Hinchinbrook Shire Council operates a library service at Halifax. The library is on Macrossan Street and is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. [6]

Halifax State School caters for students from Prep to Year 6. [7] The school opened its doors on 24 September 1883.[8]

The Herbert River Museum is located on Macrossan Street in Halifax and is open 9am-12pm Tuesday to Saturday. [9]
