Gregory F. Murphy is an American urologist currently serving as a Republican Representative in the North Carolina General Assembly.[1]

Early life and education

Murphy was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, and attended Davidson College and then Medical School at UNC. After finishing surgical training he and his wife settled in Greenville, North Carolina.

Prior to election to the North Carolina House of Representatives, Murphy served as president of a medical practice. He was also a member of the ECU School of Medicine Faculty and served as Chief of Staff of Vidant Medical Center.[2]

Career

Murphy was appointed to the Assembly in November 2015 and serves the 9th District of Pitt County, to finish the term of Brian Brown, who resigned.[3] Murphy has a lifetime rating of 86.00 from the National Rifle Association and a 100 from the North Carolina Civitas Institute.

In 2016 he faced Brian Farkas, on November 8 and won the election with 22,540 votes (57.52 percent) while Farkas had 16,648 votes (42.48 percent).

In his second term, Murphy serves as Chair on the Committee of Health and as well as Chair of Appropriations and Health and Human Services. Murphy filled for re-election for his seat in February 2018. The race in the 2018 general election was against Murphy and Kristoffer (Kris) Rixon.

Awards

Dogwood Award (2017) for his efforts in handling the state's opioid crisis. This award was conferred to him as a recognition for his effort in addressing the drug epidemic within the state by the North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein. Murphy is one of the 11 individuals who was chosen to receive the award which is to honor those “who are dedicated to keeping people safe, healthy and happy in their communities".
