Green Book is a 2018 American comedy-drama film directed by Peter Farrelly, about a real-life tour of the Deep South in the 1960s by Jamaican-American classical pianist Don Shirley and New York bouncer Tony Lip, who served as Shirley's driver and security. The screenplay was written by Nick Vallelonga, who is Tony Lip's son, Brian Hayes Currie and Peter Farrelly. It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018, where it won the People's Choice Award.[3]

It is scheduled to be released by Universal Pictures on November 21, 2018.[4]

Premise

A bouncer at a New York nightclub takes a job as a famed black pianist's chauffeur during a tour in the American Deep South, forging a close friendship while navigating the deep racism of the region.

The film is named for The Negro Motorist Green Book, usually referred to as "The Green Book", a segregation-era road travel guidebook to help African-Americans dealing with racial discrimination issues and Jim Crow laws, such as whites-only garages, restaurants and hotels refusing services.

Cast

Production

Viggo Mortensen began negotiating for a role in the film in May 2017. Peter Farrelly was set to direct from a screenplay written by Nick Vallelonga, who is Tony Lip's son, Brian Hayes Currie and Peter Farrelly.[5]

On November 30, 2017, the cast was set, with Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini and Iqbal Theba confirmed to be in the cast, and production beginning that week in New Orleans.[6][7][8] Sebastian Maniscalco was announced as part of the cast in January 2018.[9]

Release

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2018.[10] It will also screen at AFI Fest on November 9, 2018.[11] It is scheduled to be released on November 21, 2018.[4]

Reception

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 100% based on 21 reviews, with an average rating of 8.1/10.[12] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 69 out of 100, based on 8 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[13]
