The Government Mamit College is a college in the town of Mamit, Mizoram, India. It was graded B by NAAC.[1] The college offers various programmes approved by the University Grants Commission, and is affiliated with Mizoram University, Aizwal.[2]

History

The Government Mamit College was established on April 1, 1983, by the then Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) PuR. Sethuraman. The College was initially known as Taichung College, christened after Kachunga, a philanthropist from Aizawl. It was later renamed as Mamit College in March 1987. The college initially operated through financial contributions made by the local people until it was upgraded to Deficit Status in April 1993.

Mamit College had functioned for some time by using Government Middle School-I&II buildings. Afterwards, the governing body of the college acquired a substantial plot of land for its permanent campus, and constructed an Assam-type tin-roofed small building with four rooms. The college moved into the newly constructed building in 1991. It was taken over by the Government in 2007.[3]

Campus

The area of the Campus is 12,604 sq. metres (9.4 Bighas). The college compound is spacious enough for the development of infrastructures and construction of modern buildings. The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2005.

Affliation

In 1990, the Government of Mizoram granted “permission to open the College” and immediately the college applied for Affiliation under North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Shillong. On 14 May 1992, NEHU Affiliation was granted to Mamit College.Later the College was given Permanent Affiliation by Mizoram University from 1 July 2006.[4]
