Gojko Cimirot (Bosnian pronunciation: [ɡôːjko tsǐmirot]; born 19 December 1992) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Belgian First Division A club Standard Liège and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Cimirot started his professional career in Leotar, before joining Sarajevo in 2013. Two years later he moved to PAOK. In 2018 he was transferred to Standard Liège.

A former youth international for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cimirot made his senior international debut in 2014, earning 13 caps since.

Club career

Early career

Cimirot started his career with Leotar, whose youth academy he joined at the age of 7, and made his professional debut on 1 May 2010 against Široki Brijeg. He was 17 years old at the time.[2] On 28 April 2012, Cimirot scored his first professional goal, in an away triumph over Čelik Zenica.[3]

Next stop in his career was Sarajevo, who he joined in June 2013.[4]

PAOK

On 12 August 2015, Cimirot was transferred to PAOK for a fee in the region of €2 million. He put pen to paper on a three-year contract.[5] In his first official game for the club, Cimirot suffered a groin injury and was ruled out for eight weeks.[6] Upon returning from the injury, he made a string of good performances which got him voted as player of the month December.[7] Cimirot scored his first goal in a 2–2 draw against Panathinaikos on 21 February 2016.[8]

On 21 November 2016, PAOK announced the extension of Cimirot's contract for one more season, until the summer of 2019.[9] Cimirot won his first trophy with PAOK when they beat AEK Athens in Greek Cup final on 7 May 2017.[10]

On 3 August 2017, Cimirot scored in a 2–0 home win against Olimpik Donetsk, corresponding to the 2nd leg of UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, with a long shot from 35 meters. It was his first goal in European competitions for PAOK.[11]

Standard Liège

In January 2018, Cimirot joined Belgian side Standard Liège on a contract until June 2022.[12] Three days later, he debuted in a 3–3 draw against Anderlecht.[13] Cimirot won his first trophy with the club on 17 March, by beating Genk in Belgian Cup final after extra time.[14] On 29 April, Cimirot scored his first goal for Standard Liège, in a league game against Gent.[15]

International career

Cimirot was a regular member of Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 team under coach Vlado Jagodić.[16]

In August 2014, he received his first senior call-up,[17] and debuted in a friendly game against Liechtenstein on 4 September.[18]
