Gentilicamelus is an extinct genus of terrestrial herbivore in the family Camelidae, endemic to North America from the mid-Oligocene through Early Miocene 30.8—20.6 mya existing for approximately 10.2 million years.[1]

Taxonomy

Gentilicamelus was named by Loomis (1936). It was assigned to Camelidae by Loomis (1936) and Carroll (1988).[2]

Morphology

Four specimens were examined for estimated body mass by M. Mendoza, C. M. Janis, and P. Palmqvist. These specimens were estimated to weigh:

  • 52.9 kg (120 lb)
  • 77.4 kg (170 lb)
  • 64.7 kg (140 lb)
  • 43.4 kg (96 lb) [3]
