G Adventures (formerly Gap Adventures) is a small-group adventure travel company and social enterprise[1] founded in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It offers more than 700 different tours in more than 100 countries, and carries 200,000 travellers from 160 countries each year.[2] It has 28 offices around the world and employs more than 2,200 people globally. G Adventures is known for its responsible approach to travel, and has a non-profit partner, Planeterra, which was founded in 2003. Together, G Adventures and Planeterra have built more than 50 social enterprise projects into G Adventures itineraries with the aim of supporting local people and economies in the destinations they travel to.

History

Bruce Poon Tip founded Gap Adventures in 1990 after returning from a backpacking tour of Asia.[3] The company was originally named Gap Adventures - Gap being an double-entendre with the letters standing for "Great Adventure People" and the company 'bridging the gap' between backpacking and all-inclusive beach holidays. Gap's first tour visited Ecuador in February 1991 with six travellers.

In 2008, Gap Adventures was sued by American clothing company, Gap Inc., over the name. G Adventures was required to change its name by the U.S. District court that deemed the brand was an infringement on GAP Inc. clothing.[4] The ruling stated that the name and brand Gap Adventures caused legitimate confusion and dilution of the brand for the clothing company. Therefore, G Adventures was required to change its name by October 1, 2011.[5]

In January 2017, G Adventures acquired British travel brands Travelsphere and Just You,[6] which are based in Market Harborough, United Kingdom.

In 2018, G Adventures was recognized as one of the World's Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company and was honoured with an Edison Award for Social Impact.[7]

Partnerships

In 2011 G Adventures partnered with the non-profit organization Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) with the goal of helping more teachers explore the world and then bring their experiences back into their classrooms. Since then, over 2,000 teachers have traveled through the GEEO/G Adventures program.

In 2013, G Adventures entered into a $1.3 million partnership with the Multilateral Investment Fund, a member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB/MIF). IDB/MIF is the leading source of development funding for Latin America and the Caribbean. G Adventures built five new long-term, sustainable tourism projects over the following 3 years in Latin America.[8]

In 2015, G Adventures announced a partnership with National Geographic [9] which sees the two companies join forces to create a programme of 80 tours called National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures.

In 2016 on World Tourism Day, G Adventures announced a partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute.[10] The Jane Goodall Collection by G Adventures is a programme of 20 itineraries aimed at raising the awareness of animal welfare and wildlife-friendly tourism, endorsed by primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall.
