Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) is the public institution belonging to the University "Džemal Bijedić" of Mostar, located in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. [1]

Program and curriculum are based on Bologna declaration. FIT offers three-year bachelor's degree and two-years master's degree in the field of Information Technology.[2]

FIT was founded in 1997 by prof. Dr. Safet Krkic. By April 2008, 2254 students had enrolled this faculty and 211 students graduated. FIT provides in-class as well distance learning studies. Distance learning students represent the majority of the student body, whose number is constantly increasing. FIT is a public but self-financing institution which covers its costs from students fees.[3]

Since 2002, FIT has offered graduate studies.

About the Faculty of Information Technology

Following wishes and pursuit of young people, primarily of those who planned to continue their education at some of the higher-education institutions of our University, we launched an initiative in 1996 to establish a Study of Informatics at the University. The University Senate appointed a committee with a task to make a feasibility study for establishing a higher-education institution in the field of information technologies. In a relatively short period of time, the Committee made this study and it proved that the idea to establish a two-year Study of Informatics was justified. Therefore, the University Council made an official decision on 10 October 1997 to establish a new higher-education institution. By establishing Study of Informatics at the University we met demands of a great number of young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina who now have an opportunity to get educated in the area of information technology in their own country.

Dynamic development of the Study imposed the need for reorganization. A feasibility study was made and then approved by the Academic Senate and the Council of the University. Accordingly, the official decision was made and the Cantonal Court of the HN Canton registered this institution on 17 February 2003.

Keeping pace with dynamic development of IT, the curricula have been constantly modified. In the ten years of our existence we have changed and updated the content of the curricula six times.

Since 2001/02, we have been organizing distance learning studies. Our efforts will be made in this direction in the future. In the academic year of 2002/03, we initiated postgraduate study. With this activity we began applying our strategy for educating new academic staff that we lack now.

Faculty of Information Technologies (FIT) Mostar is participating in MSDN AA (Academy Alliance) program which is especially targeted at academic-education institutions. (http://www.msdnaa.net/search/SchoolSearchIntl.aspx)

This program provides access to all the latest Microsoft tools, servers and platforms. The advantage for an education institution is in getting a licensed software used in the process of education (classrooms, laboratories, test environments etc.) As a member of MSDN AA program, FIT is allowed to distribute licensed copies of Microsoft products to its students. The only condition is that students are allowed to install software on their PCs, activate copies and use them only in educational and not commercial purposes. Complete text of EULA (End User Licence Agreement) can be found on the following web site: http://www.msdnaa.net/EULA/EMEA/English.aspx#eula After a student stops studying (either by graduation or by quitting the Faculty), he or she can keep the copy but can not get updates and new versions from FIT. Institution's policy is to distribute software only to students on the second year, since the number of students on the first year is rather high.

The following software is distributed to students without any financial compensation:

Windows VISTA (since January 2007) MS Visio 2007 MS Access 2007 SQL Server 2005 Developer Visual Studio.NET 2005 Windows 2003 Standard

FIT also owns software from the MSDN Universal subscription used for running on its infrastructure. Students who would like to use the above explained advantage should contact MSDN AA administrator, assistant Jasmin Azemovic.

Procedure for getting an available software installation is the following:

Students contact MSDN AA administrator and specify the software they would like to have MSDN AA administrator, as authorized, informs the students about the software they can get the installation for and what media is necessary to get the copy (one or more blank DVDs) Students bring blank DVD(s) MSDN AA administrator makes a copy of installation file on DVD(s) and distributes key(s) for software installation Students take over the DVD(s) and the key(s)
