Emanuel Maurice "Emil" Bachrach[2] (July 4, 1874 – 1937) was a Russian Jewish-born American entrepreneur and philanthropist in the Philippines.[3]
Emil arrived in the US from Russia at the age of 18. With around 850 US dollars, he again immigrated to Manila, arriving in 1901 and started a successful furniture company.[4] He started the Bachrach Motors Inc by securing a franchise from Ford Motor Co. He then started the Philippine Air Taxi Co(PATCO) in 1930 which was bought in 1939 by Andres Soriano and in 1941 merged into Philippine Airlines(PAL). PAL also inherited its license to operate as an airliner from PATCO. He was a philanthropist, who supported both Jewish and Christian causes and accommodated Jews fleeing from Nazi Germany.[5][6] Emil was a major contributor to the building of the Jewish Temple Emil Synagogue.[7][8][9]
