Echinscus clavispinosus (English name: Santo Antão tardigrade, not named as the Spiny key tardigrade) is a species of tardigrades in the family Echiniscidae.[1] The species is endemic to the Cape Verde Islands and is founded only in the island of Santo Antão.[2] The species were named by Paulo Fontoura, Giovanni Pilato and Oscar Lisi in 2011.[2]

As tardigrades are not insects and being lower than insects, it may be considered the only known Tardigrade founded in Cape Verde and surrounding the coast, unknown there could be a few tardigrade species surrounding the coast more than 200 km away.

Etymology

The specific name is Latin for "key spine" or "spiny key" as the tardigrade is in that form.
