Domee Shi (Chinese: 石之予; pinyin: Shí Zhīyǔ; born 1989) is a Chinese-Canadian storyboard artist for Pixar since 2011. She has contributed to multiple films including Inside Out (2015), Incredibles 2 (2018), and Toy Story 4 (2019). Outside of her storyboard career, Shi directed the 2018 short film Bao and became the first woman to direct a short film for Pixar. She was nominated for the Outstanding Achievement for Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production award at the 43rd Annie Awards.

Early life and education

Shi grew up in Chongqing before moving with her family to Toronto when she was a toddler.[1] During her childhood, she was interested in drawing and watching Studio Ghibli anime.[2] As a high school student, Shi uploaded her fan artwork to DeviantArt and was inspired to enroll at Sheridan College for her post-secondary education.[3] At Sheridan, Shi studied animation and graduated in 2011.[4]

Career

Shi began working at Pixar in 2011 after completed an internship with the animation studio. She first worked on Inside Out (2015) as a storyboard artist.[5] After briefly working on The Good Dinosaur, she began working on Toy Story 4 in 2015.[3] She also drew for the 2018 film Incredibles 2.[6] Apart from her storyboard career, Shi directed the 2018 short film Bao. With her film, Shi became the first woman to direct a Pixar short film.[7] Shi also wrote a webcomic called My Food Fantasies.[8]

Influences

In an interview with Now Magazine, Shi said the animated films My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) and Spirited Away (2001) were her influences when creating her film Bao.[9]

Awards and nominations

At the 43rd Annie Awards, Shi was a nominee of the Outstanding Achievement for Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production award for her work on Inside Out.[10]
