Devanthakudu (English: Daredevil) is a 1960 Telugu fantasy comedy film, produced and directed by C. Pullaiah under the Bhargavi Films banner.[2][3] It stars N. T. Rama Rao and Krishna Kumari in the lead roles,[4] with music composed by Ashwatthama.[5] The film is based on a novel of Dinabandhu Mitra and a Bengali film in the same name, Jamalaye Jibanta Manush and it is the first socio-fantasy film in Telugu.[6]

Plot

Sundaram (N. T. Rama Rao) is a stage actor. He falls in love with Meenakshi (Krishnakumari), the daughter of a miserly rich man, Bhadraiah (K. V. S. Sarma), who dislikes Sundaram. Bhadraiah fixes his daughter’s marriage with an aged billionaire despite his wife's (Hemalatha) protests. Meenakshi and Sundaram get married secretly with the help of his friends. Bhadraiah enters with his goons, drags his daughter home while his men brutally assault Sundaram. Meenakshi jumps into a river to commit suicide. Crestfallen, Sundaram repents that he was responsible for her death. The same night while he is asleep on a verandah, Yama’s men unable to find the address of a dead man, take Sundaram instead with them to hell, the abode of Yama Dharma Raju (S. V. Ranga Rao). Sundaram finds his bull there and by unleashing it on Yama Dharma Raja, he occupies his throne, promotes Vichitra Chitragupta (Peketi Sivaram) rewrites Yama Loka’s constitution and also takes the opportunity to search for Meenakshi with the help of Narada Maharshi (Raghuramaiah), who takes him to Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Vishnu (Kanta Rao) and Lakshmi (Mohana) and to Indraloka, the heaven where he finds Meenakshi. With Vishnu and Lakshmi’s blessings, Meenakshi is brought to life and to Sundar and the two return to Earth. Bhadraiah relents and accepts Sundar as his son-in-law.
