Hodgson was born in 1798, the son of Charles Hodgson, a Norwich school master and amateur artist, who actively encouraged him to develop his artistic talents.[1] He attended Norwich School, where he was taught by John Crome, who trained him to work in oil, watercolour and other media. He worked in Norwich all life, eventually succeeding his father as Art master at Norwich School. He exhibited works at the Norwich Society of Arts and in other cities around England.[2]
