Obadiah Short (26 July 1803–1886) was an English sketcher and painter of landscapes and a member of the Norwich School of painters.

Life

Short was born on 26 July 1803 and baptised in the parish church of St Augustine's Church, Norwich.[1].html His father, a soldier, was killed in 1809, his mother dying not long before the death of her husband. Due to his circumstances the boy received no formal education and he worked as an uneducated weaver from 1815 to 1829. The physician of the artist John Crome took an interest in Short and introduced him to the Earl of Leicester, who allowed to study the artistic treasures of his stately home, Holkham Hall. Short's individual style of drawing and painting can probably be accounted for by his access to the Earl's past masters and to other works. During much of his adult life worked for a Norwich firm of designers.[2]

Obadiah Short died on 15 July 1886 at Heigham, Norwich, aged 83.[3]
