Dalian American International School

Dalian American International School (DAIS; Chinese: 大连美国国际学校) is an American international school in the Golden Pebble Beach National Resort (金石滩滇), in Jinzhou New District, Dalian, China,[1][2] about 60 kilometres (37 mi) east of the center of Dalian. It is owned by the Honor Roll Company.[3]

The American international school program, serving grades Pre-Kindergarten to 12,[3] admits pupils who are not Mainland Chinese citizens.[4] Mainland Chinese are instead admitted to the Huamei Academy (华美学院), a grade 7-12 program.[5]

The organization owning DAIS administers a Montessori-style preschool on the DAIS campus; this preschool is administratively separate from DAIS.[6]

History

Honor Roll established DAIS in 2006 after Intel asked for an international schooling option for children of its employees; Intel had started operations in the Dalian area that year.[3]

Student body

As of 2018 the international division of DAIS had 473 students. There are lots of students from Germany, Korea, Russia, U.S., Hungry, Canada, the Philippines, Chinese-American, and Japan. This year (2017-2018) Huamei Academy had around 300 Chinese national students. In regards to the employers of the students' parents and guardians, students at the school who have one or more parents/guardians working for Intel make up some of the group.[3] The language needs of the student body are diverse.

Residential Life

The dormitories for the Huamei Academy are located in the first building of the entrance right above the Cafe/ Restaurant. Each room has six to eight beds and two restrooms. The meals are served at the Hungry Scholar Cafe, the students have a choice of a Chinese Meal or a Western Meal. The study hall (a service parents pay extra for) for the students is between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm in the evening Monday through Thursday. Time after 8:00 is free time, until later in the night when students are expected to be asleep.
