Dag Herbjørnsrud (born 11 January 1971) is a Norwegian historian of ideas, author, and founder of Center for Global and Comparative History of Ideas (Senter for global og komparativ idéhistorie, SGOKI) in Oslo. In the Norwegian book "Global Knowledge" (Globalkunnskap, 2016) and in an essay on the blog of the Journal of the History of Ideas (JHI) he argues for the need of a "global history of ideas".[1]

Herbjørnsrud has been the editor-in-chief of the Norwegian weekly left-wing news magazine Ny Tid in 2005-06 and from 2008 to 2015, and a reporter for the conservative newspaper Aftenposten from 1995 to 2005.[2][3] As an editor of Ny Tid, Herbjørnsrud contributed to the making of the TV and Netflix thriller Occupied (2015), in which he ("editor Dag") was played by the actor Øystein Røger.[4] He is the son of writer Hans Herbjørnsrud and historian Anna Tranberg, and graduated from West County High School, Missouri, in 1989. From 1991 to 1994, Herbjørnsrud studied political science at the University of Oslo.[5]

He graduated as cand. philol. of history of ideas in 2002 with an English-language thesis on the later philosophy of Robert Nozick titled Leaving Libertarianism: Social Ties in Robert Nozick's New Philosophy.[6] In the thesis, Herbjørnsrud argued that Nozick left libertarianism in his later years.[6] In a 2005 interview with the Norwegian liberal-conservative periodical Minerva, Herbjørnsrud stated that Nozick advocated the welfare state, and that Anarchy, State, and Utopia is not representative for Nozick's writings.[7]

He is a former political columnist for Al-Jazeera's English website, a former journalist and commentator in the newspaper Morgenbladet (1993–1995), and the information magazine of the Center for Higher Studies (SHS) in Norway (1995-96).[2][8]
