It is a dominant shopping center in northeast Iowa with a trade area that extends more than 50 miles (80 km). The mall opened in 1969 and is owned by Urban Retail. It is located in the heart of a retail hub that includes a 12 screen theater, Best Buy, SuperTarget, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath & Beyond and many other national tenants. The mall is located near the interchange of Interstate 380 and U.S. Highway 20.

The mall's anchors include Younkers - closing sometime in 2018, Dillard's (added in 1996)[2] and At Home.[3] Other former anchors included JCPenney which closed in April 2015, James Black (later Donaldson's, then Carson Pirie Scott), F.W. Woolworth Company and Sears. On January 4, 2018, it was announced that Sears would be closing as part of a plan to close 103 stores nationwide. The store will closed in April 2018.[4] In April 2018, Younker's parent company, the Bon Ton Stores, announced they would be completely liquidating and closing all stores including the one at Crossroads. The store will close in August.[5]
