Eleutherodactylus jota Lynch, 1980[3]

Craugastor jota is a species of frog in the family Craugastoridae. It is endemic to Panama and only known from its type locality along the Río Changena, Bocas del Toro Province.[2][4] The specific name jota (Spanish name for the letter J) honors Jay M. Savage, an American herpetologist.[3][5] Common name Rio Changena robber frog has been coined for it.[2][4]

Description

The type series consists of six females, two of which were juveniles. The four adult females measure 25–29 mm (0.98–1.14 in) in snout–vent length.[3] Males are unknown.[4] The snout is long and ovoid in dorsal view, depressed and somewhat pointed in lateral view. The canthus rostralis is sharp. The supra-tympanic fold becomes distinct only behind the tympanum. The fingers have no lateral keels and have weakly bulbous tips. The toes have no lateral keels either but bear discs.[3] The dorsum is grayish brown or brown. There are some spots and an inter-orbital bar. A black line marks the canthal and the supra-tympanic fold. The belly is dark brown or black and has bluish-white flecks, or is gray-orange. The throat is orange or gray-orange.[3]

Habitat and conservation

Craugastor jota is known from a humid montane forest[1] at 830 m (2,720 ft) above sea level. All specimens were found on the forest floor.[1][3]

No threats to this poorly known species have been identified. It appears to occur in the La Amistad International Park.[1]
