"Cool Girl" is a song by Swedish singer and songwriter Tove Lo. It was written by Lo with the record production duo Jakob Jerlström and Ludvig Söderberg, AKA The Struts, who produced the track. "Cool Girl" was released for download by Island Records on 4 August 2016 as the lead single from Lo's second studio album, Lady Wood. The song peaked at #15 in Sweden the week after its release. The music video premiered on 19 August 2016.

Composition

"Cool Girl" is an electropop[1] song written by Tove Lo (Nilsson), Ludvig Söderberg, and Jakob Jerlström, with its production handled by the latter two as the production duo The Struts.[2] Lyrically, the song is about an invitation to form a non-traditional and non-monogamous relationship, whereby the singer describes herself as a "cool girl" interested in an open relationship.[1] According to Lo, the song's main lyrical theme was inspired by a scene and monologue from the feature film Gone Girl (2014), when Amy Elliott-Dunne (portrayed by Rosamund Pike) "goes from being a victim to a psycho."[3]

Music video

The song's music video, directed by Tim Erem, premiered on 19 August 2016, via Lo's Vevo channel.[4] The video is a part of the short film, Fairy Dust, which features the first six songs from Lady Wood. The video shows Lo dancing in overalls around and on top of a car filled with people at a motel. Another scene depicts her with her head shaved and bare midriff dancing on top of a display case in the desert.
