Colossos is a wooden roller coaster at Heide Park in Soltau, Lower Saxony, Germany. Unlike traditional wooden roller coasters, Colossos was prefabricated, meaning the track was laser cut in a factory to achieve a higher degree of precision. The sections were designed to snap together like Lego pieces. Some of the wooden planks were tightly bonded together in multiple layers instead of being traditionally nailed together by hand.

Construction

The "plug and play" aspect of the coaster sped up construction and lowered building costs by reducing the amount of labor required. Three other prefabricated wooden roller coasters have since been built: Balder at Liseberg in Sweden, El Toro at Six Flags Great Adventure in United States of America, and T Express at Everland in South Korea.

As a first wooden coaster features magnetic brake run just before station, which makes final braking very smooth and comfortable against other coasters with usual friction claw brakes.

Closing in 2016

Since July 28th, 2016, the coaster ceased operations and will not be open at all for the 2017 season. Since then, all paths to the coaster have been blocked off.[1]

Inspections since 2016

It was repeatedly announced that inspection revealed unacceptable conditions of the track. Future options would be revisited. After complete examination it was claimed that the track needs to be repaired and the price will be over 10 million.[1]

Reopening

In early January 2018, the park announced that the entire track surface will be replaced by new one and the ride will reopen with the summer season opening of the park in 2019. Expenses are counted to roughly 12 million euros.[1]
