Claud Hamilton, 4th Earl of Abercorn

Claud Hamilton, 4th Earl of Abercorn (1659 – August 1691) was a Scottish and Irish peer and Jacobite.

He was the eldest son of George Hamilton, 4th Baron Hamilton of Strabane and Elizabeth Fagan, and was baptized in Dublin on 13 September 1659.[1] He came from a Roman Catholic family of landowners in County Tyrone. He succeeded his father as Baron Hamilton of Strabane in 1668. Around 1680, his father's cousin George Hamilton, 3rd Earl of Abercorn, of the Scottish branch of the family, died in Padua, and Claud succeeded him as heir-male.[1]

He followed James II to France after the Glorious Revolution, and returned with the King to Ireland in 1689, receiving appointment as a member of the Jacobite Privy Council of Ireland and a Lord of the Bedchamber.[1][2] He raised a regiment of horse in Ireland for James,[3] and led it in Lord Mountcashel's expedition against Enniskillen in July 1689. He was wounded in Mountcashel's defeat at Newtownbutler on 31 July.[2] Abercorn was outlawed and attained in Ireland by the Williamites on 11 May 1691, forfeiting his Irish peerage.[1] He commanded a regiment of horse on the right wing at the Battle of Aughrim. Tyrconnel sent him back to France to carry news of the battle to James, but his ship was intercepted by a Dutch man-of-war off Brest and Abercorn was killed in the fight.[4] He was succeeded by his younger brother Charles.[1]
