Christopher Hussey (died 1686)

Christopher Hussey (1599 – 1686) was an English nobleman and one of the first settlers in New England.

Career

Hampton Beach - Captain Christopher Hussey of Hampton, was commissioned to govern the Royal Province of New Hampshire in 1679.[1]

Christopher Hussey was born in Dorking, Surrey, England, in 1599. By 1633, Hussey had settled in New Hampshire with his wife Theodate (née Bachiler) and mother Mary (née Wood) (died June 16, 1660, married December 5, 1593 to John Hussey, born 1570, died July 24, 1632) where he purchased land.

Hussey was one of the original founders of Nantucket, Massachusetts, becoming a landowner there by the 1660s. Hussey became a Lieutenant in 1653 and a Captain in 1664.[2] In 1679, he was an Officer of the Crown having been commissioned by King Charles II of England to "govern the Royal Province of New Hampshire".[3][4] He was the first person in Hampton, Rockingham County, to swear allegiance to King Charles II. He died in 1686.[5][6]

Christopher Hussey was reportedly the great-great-great-grandson of John Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford, by his first marriage to Dame Margaret Blount. Lord Hussey was beheaded by King Henry VIII in 1537 for treason.[7][8] The NEHGS, however, say that his descent from noble houses "seems highly unlikely".[9]

Hussey's direct descendant Mary Hussey Smith

Actress Meghan Markle's great-great-great-grandmother was New Hampshire landowner Mary (Bessie) Hussey Smith (1824–1908),[10] herself a direct descendant of Captain Hussey. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex is the spouse of Prince Harry.[11][12]
