Chaim Deutsch is the Council member for the 48th District of the New York City Council. He is a Democrat. The district includes Brighton Beach, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend, Manhattan Beach, Marine Park, Midwood, Plum Beach and Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn.

Life and career

Deutsch grew up and lives in Brooklyn. His parents grew up in Romania and were holocaust survivors.[4] As a teenager, his father survived three concentration camps before coming to the United States.[5] Growing up, Deutsch lived in a small two-bedroom apartment as one of four boys. In between studying at yeshiva, Deutsch took up a number of jobs to support his family, such as making Pizza in a kosher Pizza shop.[6] He eventually married his wife Sara at age 19 and worked in real estate management.[7] Deutsch is a graduate of the NYPD Citizens Police Academy. In 1991, he founded the Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol. Following the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Deutsch mobilized volunteers to evacuate residents and assist in the distribution of goods to people affected by the storm. Prior to being elected as Councilman in 2013, he served as vice president and police liaison for the Council of Jewish Organizations of Flatbush (COJO),[8] was a constituent liaison for Councilman Lloyd Henry and worked as Chief of Operations for Councilman Michael Nelson. He has been married to his wife Sara Deutsch for over 27 years and has 5 children as well as 2 grandchildren.[9]

He was elected to the 48th Council District, in Brooklyn, New York on November 5, 2013, Deutsch defeating Republican David Storobin. He succeeded Democrat Mike Nelson on the city council.[10] In 2017, Deutsch won re-election [11] after defeating both an opponent in the Democratic primary[12] and General election.[13]
