Cartridge World is a business specialising in retailing ink and toner cartridges for domestic and commercial computer printers. Cartridge World also franchises these outlets. The business model is to refill OEM printer cartridges, and to sell the cartridges cheaper than the branded products. Empty cartridges are obtained, by encouraging users to recycle them in store or elsewhere.

Company overview

Cartridge World uses a franchise model to license stores specialising in ink and toner cartridges, printers, and related products and services. The stores also lease printers, offer printer servicing, and sell other office supplies. There are more than 1,400 Cartridge World stores globally.

The website refers to national headquarters offices in Hong Kong; Adelaide, Australia; Harrogate, England; Spring Grove, Illinois, United States; and Paris, France.

The company was founded in 1992, by Bryan Stokes, as the "Australian Cartridge Company" in Adelaide, and changed the name to Cartridge World in 1999. The first store was enfranchised in 1997, and in August 2007, private equity fund Wolseley Private Equity purchased the business. In February 2001, the first Cartridge World in the United Kingdom was opened in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Since 2009, the network in the United Kingdom has collapsed from nearly three hundred stores, to just over one hundred. Of the new franchises opened since 2009, very few have been successful, most have closed down having been unable to build a customer base. others have left the brand and gone independent (Yarmouth, Headingley, Dagenham, Urmston, Pudsey and others)[1]

In June 2013, Cartridge World in the United Kingdom closed its warehouse, and subcontracted supply after asking suppliers to extend credit terms, for supplies already delivered. At the same time, a number of redundancies were made, and the head office moved from Harrogate to smaller offices.[2]

In June 2015, Cartridge World was acquired by Suzhou Goldengreen Technologies Ltd. In June 2016, Cartridge World Global CEO, Steve Weedon, announced a strategic partnership with Samsung, to offer mobile print and scanning services worldwide. [3]

In August 2016, Cartridge World was named one of the 50 Most Admired Companies of the Year 2016.[4] In November 2016, Cartridge World underwent a corporate restructuring. Subsequently, Rod Young was appointed as Global Chief Executive Officer of Cartridge World. Peter Lim, with thirty years of experience in the printer cartridge industry, was brought on board and appointed as its Global Chief Operating Officer.

Mark Pinner was appointed as Global Chief Technical Officer and CEO of Cartridge World North America and Edwin Lui, previously General Manager Cartridge World Asia and Middle East, was also appointed as Global Chief Financial Officer.[5]
