During the summer of 2017, he played in the Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park.[2] As a senior in 2018, he was named the Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year for Florida after going 6–2 with a 0.91 ERA and 128 strikeouts.[3]

Stewart was considered one of the top prospects for the 2018 Major League Baseball draft,[4][5] and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves with the eight overall pick.[6] Due to a wrist injury, Atlanta offered a low signing bonus,[7] and he did not sign with the Braves.[8][9]
